Give them a short range "bombardment" attack where they can hit a city near the coast without having to sit there useless. It would make destroyers WAY more useful and give sea power more of a purpose.
Cities close to the sea but not on it would be forced to be ready to address destroyers, instead of ignoring them like currently. Good idea or no?

Mmm good idea.
It should be that they can't capture the city, just hit it the same way bombers do. Destroyers should not be able to get hurt in the conflict; but with this engine, I don't think you can have a group of destroyers preform an attack without getting in the fight themselves.
Perhaps give destroyers the ability to create short range, mildly powerful missiles (like the tomahawk) for 10-20$ getting 1 reinforcement every turn?
Imagine a group of destroyers being able to harass a heavily defended Rome in Europe; they would have to build some bombers to take them out. This system could make actual effective blockades. A strong enough force of destroys could just bomb the crap out of cities near to the coast.
If you see this admins, please consider it. It would be a cool new dynamic for gameplay.

I like this idea, naval units right now are horribly useless against the land

I blame this post, Destroyers are really useful.

Although i agree with raetahcodeupon that destroyers are not useless, i like this idea very much (bombing from distance). Maybe you can also add a unit that can be used for this. That will not have to move, but can fire from distance.

Interesting - but BLOODY difficult to code.
What about making them like naval bombers - unable to capture a town without transports?
I find destroyers interesting - they are pretty good at defending coastal towns!

Good idea. The whole concept of bombardment is already applied in Civilization series and I guess those who already played it know it's a good feature to be implemented.

That's what I thought too, but hopefully Ivan and Amok have a positive view on that one. I know it would have to work and be coded way different than it's on Civilazation, since we don't have "predefined points".

That would pretty much kill it's essence and only advantage against bombers. NC is already a hard enough to play with, so there's no need to nerf it in any way.

I think the only problem with adding bombs that the destroyers can make is that the game most likely (obviously) has a different set of coding for the units and cities, and it'd throw everything off giving a unit city-like abilities such as building other units.

Alright, so basically we are all for it, but it would be difficult to code.
It might not be. I hope Ivan sees this :3

I immediately thought "Battleship" the game when I saw tomahawk sea-to-land missile.

This is right, but there are barely situations to make a good use of them. But this whole concept of bombardment looks pretty interesting to me and especially Hugosch's idea of a whole new unit. This could also be combined with a special strategy, so it's definitely worth to think about that.
