Russia to develop methane-powered rocket engine

"We are planning to make a sample methane powered engine, even though there is currently no intention to build rockets that would use such an engine," Izvestia cited one of the program developers as saying.

"This way we are planning to stay ahead of the curve and not to be left behind our foreign competitors in terms of technological advances. For now we are talking about creating an average thrust engine for the second stage of the prospective rocket."

If that's an actual idea, and not a joke, then I believe Pyrrhus might be right.

Methane is actually combustible and has a very high CO2 coefficiency when it comes to global warming of athmospheric emissions. Besides, finally those cows can do something useful for a vegetarian.

Sure... if they manage to get enough natural gas for it.
Anyway, fuel is way too efficient compared to methane...

But it's still highly detrimental to our enviroment to have the methane in our athmosphere.

It's not in our atmosphere. It's underground, where it doesn't hurt anything. We're taking methane that's not in the atmosphere to bring CO2 instead. We lose.

I guess they'll import some american fatasses and produce Methane at an industrial scale aswell?
