I've found that sometimes I get an alliance request from someone that I don't know who they are. It would be nice if I could still zoom around the map and see the lay of the land before I deny or accept an alliance or peace request.

Check the name, go to player tab, and see where they are based on the starting country and color.

A zoom into the players country could help. yh. You can't see it otherwise.

Indeed; minimap allows scrolling around.
But still a good idea to be free to zoom around the map.
