GW has a significant disadvantage in turn 1 expansion because the infantry attack sucks. Because of this, GW seems like a poor choice in EU games, especially in 10K+. Why not just replace starting infantry with militia? Or would that reveal the strategy being used to other players too easily...?

Only Germany, UK, France and Russia Central use INF as starting units in a EU+ game. Actually GW isn't the best strat to be used with these countries in a 10k map. Try using RA, PD, IF or Blitz instead.

GW is great... I just doubt its application in EU+ 10k games. I preferr not to use stealth units in EU games; the closeness of cities (targets) does not really represent a stealth-promoting setting. Surprise-attacks can be done with "conventional" (non-stealth) units. In general you are right GW is Op... I just preferr other strats under these circumstances.

Completely situational. Good luck as GW Ukraine vs SM Spain / PD France / PD UK. But if you're GW Germany vs any of those above You're in for a really good day.

Replacing starting infantry with militia isn't exactly the best approach. Infantry have much more range than militia, and if you don't have specific upgrades then they have about as much range as marines. This basically means you'd nerf pick combos like Germany GW. Germany GW is dependent on using infantry from either Berlin or Munich to take Vienna. Your current suggestion would murder the use of GW in Europe+. Just buy militia instead. It's cheap and already an option. Also, if you're using GW it would be noticed immediately after the first or second turn (you won't have 10/10 expansion as GW without using marines here and there).

I meant the INF units that come with your cities at the start (regardless of the country you pick). If you choose GW, you are stuck with a bunch of marines with 2 attack. It might be nice to have those replaced by militia. I realize that well rehearsed opening sequences might be dependent on the extra range that infantry have (as V/Makarov mentionned for Germany). For any balkans start, it would definitely be better.

Not exactly. Most GW users will find creative methods to eliminate most of their infantry if not use them to create large elaborate walls. This isn't a problem, that's really what I'm getting it. Infantry in starting country are fine. All you have to do is buy other units on top of them and make it work. Militia starting means important areas like RC would be difficult to reach first turn as Ukraine. You'd have to send Marines to take Romania. You couldn't take Warsaw first turn without sending a transport from Kiev or reinforcing that city in the far western Ukraine with units from Odessa. Austria wouldn't take Poland first turn with anything. And in this case it means that those surplus units you don't want become normal units you want. It's not as easy to waste them on walls or risking them in distant locations. Militia are valuable for expansion, but without infantry it looks very ugly for GW's presence in European games.
