 Dave (Admin)
If you have been following the forums over the last few days, undoubtedly you have seen the dramatic confrontation between myself and another member of the community.

Myself and Laochra have been in conflict since the first day we met. While I stand by everything I said about him, I regret that it was done in public for all of you to witness. I have been working hard to reduce toxicity on atWar, yet what I posted the other day was very toxic stuff. For the sake of the community, it should have been done in private.

If we go by the rulebook, I'm sure I violated at least rule 3.3 ("Do not post to pillory other players"), if not other rules. If I were any other player, I would no doubt receive some kind of ban for it. However, being admin and owner, it's not very practical to ban myself, as that would simply mean the many tasks I do for the community would not be done at all.

So instead, I'm going to be voluntarily stepping back from the community for a while. Aside from a few certain things like official announcements, bug reports, etc., I will not be participating.

In the next day or two I will be appointing a new admin to the game, who will be responsible for handling any community issues going forward. The new admin has already kindly agreed to take the position, we're just finalizing a few details before I promote him. An announcement will be made once this is done.

(By the way, the decision to appoint a new admin was made days prior to my Lao roast, because it was already becoming clear I was letting myself become too involved in the community. Going forward I really need to focus on the programming and business side of things instead.)

It should go without saying, but our effort to reduce toxicity in the atWar community will continue unabated. Yes I said some toxic things in public that should have been done in private. I'm human, and after being provoked for 4 months I couldn't keep my cool about the situation. However that doesn't make it okay to repeat the same kind of behavior. Moderators will continue enforcing the rules as they always have.

Thank you for your understanding.
-Dave

As someone who has experience administrating a game with a large community, you're always going to get into conflict with a few users who will hate you no matter what you do. It can be stressful and demotivating, but you have to remember that more people support you and that small group of haters are insignificant and are just seeking attention.

I don't think it's wrong for you to get 'too' involved with the community. It's nice seeing the owner of atWar being involved with the community, but a break after this drama would probably be the best thing for now I guess.

Hopefully once you're back from your break you'll feel better. And good luck to the new admin (which is apparently sid I think according to InExile).

I haven't kept up to date with whatever has happened, frankly I don't care about 'beef' between two individuals.

But I do know this, if someone is arguing a point of contention and is quite vocal, it is because they care about the game - harness that as without it you are left with a bunch of uninterested drones.

I completely agree with Crow on this matter.

I honestly think that there is no wrong doing in being involved with the community. Ofcourse there should be boundries to a certain amount of involvement, but so far i've seen no real problems occuring from it. Although I could understand a stepback in order to spend your time more efficiënt, like fixing bugs/mechanics in this game, since the involvement is kinda time consuming.

Like hdrakon said before, I hope this doesn't demotivate you from being involved with the community ever again, since I am sure most of the people enjoyed having an admin that was involved with them and didn't just work behind the scenes, as if he was just a human being like the rest of us .

As for the new admin, I wonder who you guys have in mind, because I honestly don't see alot of potential within this community to fill that spot, so thats something to look forward to.

Thank you for your classy response. I appreciate that you do not make lame excuses for your words or lame exceptions for your rules. I also appreciate that you do not bend the rules or obstruct justice even though you are in power. I understand that what you have said was in fact a spur of moment. You are a human after all. I do recognise that it takes great courage to admit one's fault. And for that reason I am going to move on. I hope that you can lead AW to a brighter future.
