"1866: German War" is a scenario based on the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (also known as German War etc.).

Historical Background:
In 1866 Prussia decides to solve the long conflict with Austria over hegemony in the German Confederation with its military might. Therefore it allies with other German States and the recently established Kingdom of Italy and occupies Holstein, which is held by Austria. Austria and its allies then declare war on Prussia and the German Confederation turns into a battlefield.

Reinforcements and income in this scenario were calculated by using historic statistical data about population and revenues of the states. Large states like Bavaria, Prussia and Austria were split up into their historical provinces. Prussia and Austria were also divided into 2 players each because of their extent.

Map:

Units:

Due to Prussian military reforms they are the only faction able to build Advanced Infantry (, which is equipped with breechloaders). Militia is the non-German equivalent for Landwehr and Light Infantry the Non-German equivalent for Jäger.

Factions:

Austria & allies:
Austrian Empire (Cisleithania): This faction encompasses the western parts of the Austrian Empire. Due to its population it can raise many units, but the Austrian Empire is going through an economical crisis, so it cannot afford big upkeep costs.
Austrian Empire (Transleithania): This faction is simply the Hungarian part of the Austrian Empire. Due to its population it can raise many units, but it cannot afford big upkeep costs.
Bavaria: Bavaria is a rather large and potent German state in the south.
Hannover: This kingdom is situated in the Northwest like a thorn in Prussia's flesh. Due to its location it's surrounded by enemies. If its allies care about Hannover, they should send support immediately.
Saxony: Saxony is situated between Prussia and Austria and will need help to push back invaders.
Hessian States: This faction consists of several medium sized states and the city of Frankfurt. Thanks to its position it can attack Prussia's Rhenish holdings and help Hannover out.
Swabian States: These medium sized states are Baden and Württemberg, which are located east of the upper Rhine.

Prussia & allies:
Prussia (East): This faction encompasses the larger part of Prussia along the coast of the Baltic Sea.
Prussia (West): This faction consists of Prussia's Rhenish holdings in the West and the recently gained duchies in the North. Thanks to resources and industrialisation the Rhenish territories are very wealthy and highly populated.
Italy: Italy is located in the South and isolated from its allies. Its position is suited to bind Austrian forces in the South and distract enemies.
North German States: This is a conglomerate of the wealthy Hanseatic cities and some Grand Duchies along the coasts of the North and the Baltic Sea.
Minor German States: This a conglomerate of some small states in Central Germany.

If you like to play this map without scenario, there is also a map with additional Switzerland, Poland and West France called "Central Europe (19th century)".

P.S.: In reality Austria and its allies lost in only seven weeks. This war ended the history of Austria as a German state and was one of the wars of Unification. In 1871 the German Empire was created.
